Napoleon iii (Louis Napoleon Bonaparte) was president of the French republic from 1848 to 1852 and emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870. Nephew of Napoleon i, he was born prince of Holland in 1808. As an adult, after several attempts at a coup d'etat (boulogne, Strasbourg), he managed to get elected president of the republic by universal suffrage in 1848. His coup d'état of 2 December 1852 ended the second republic. He then established a new empire. His policy then sized to restore the greatness of France, which displeased the Prussian kingdom. The end of his reign came at the end of the Battle of Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Napoleon iii then went into exile in Great Britain, where he died three years later, in 1873.
